Demerol 50 mg (meperidine hydrochloride) is a prescription opioid analgesic indicated for the short-term treatment of acute pain severe enough to require an opioid when other pain management options are inadequate or not tolerated. Meperidine works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and central nervous system, altering the body’s perception of pain.
Because of its safety profile, including the risk of accumulation of a neurotoxic metabolite (normeperidine), meperidine is used less frequently than other opioid analgesics. Prolonged use or use in patients with kidney impairment may increase the risk of adverse neurological effects, including tremors and seizures.
Demerol carries boxed warnings for addiction, abuse, misuse, life-threatening respiratory depression, neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, and potentially dangerous interactions with other central nervous system depressants. Patients should take the medication exactly as prescribed and avoid alcohol or sedating medications unless directed by their healthcare provider.
Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, constipation, sweating, and lightheadedness. Patients should not drive or operate machinery until they know how the medication affects them.
This medication should be stored securely and kept out of the reach of children. Unused medication should be disposed of through an approved medication take-back program when available.
